The Because Of Our Tomorrow, BOOT, Party, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to introduce real-time tracking of vehicles transporting election materials and personnel ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
The National Chairman of the party, Sonny Adenuga, said electronic tracking would strengthen accountability and help ensure a credible electoral process.
Adenuga said INEC should take advantage of available technology to improve election logistics, particularly after decades of democratic governance.
He said the competitiveness of previous Osun elections made effective logistics particularly important.
He noted that the 2018 governorship election was decided by a margin of 482 votes after the supplementary poll, while the margin in 2022 was 28,344 votes.
According to him, logistical delays affecting even a small number of polling units could become significant when aggregated across a closely contested election.
“INEC has strengthened the electoral process — now strengthen logistics accountability,” he said.
The party urged INEC to ensure that every vehicle transporting sensitive election materials and electoral personnel was continuously traceable from departure to destination during the August 15 election and the 2027 general elections.
Adenuga said delays, diversions or breakdowns did not automatically imply wrongdoing, but the absence of reliable records created an accountability gap.
“That is the accountability gap that technology can help close. From ‘Trust Us’ to ‘Show Us the Evidence’,” he said.
He said INEC already had logistics management and monitoring systems and should build on those arrangements rather than starting from scratch.
“The BOOT Party is not proposing that INEC start from scratch,” he said.
He proposed two measures: mandatory real-time tracking of vehicles carrying election personnel and sensitive materials, and the establishment of an Electoral Logistics Corps within INEC.
Adenuga argued that electoral malpractice could occur beyond ballot-box snatching and multiple voting, citing possible vulnerabilities such as unexplained delays, unauthorised stops, route diversions and late deployment of election officials.
He said every significant logistical delay should be “traceable, explainable and auditable.”
