The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered the remains of a cow allegedly butchered by hoodlums who attacked a herder in Etoi Village, Uyo Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that operatives are trailing the suspects responsible for the attack and theft.
According to John, officers responded to a distress call at about 5:30 p.m. on September 11, reporting that a herder had been ambushed in the bush while one of his cows was being slaughtered.
“On sighting the police team, the suspects fled, abandoning six sacks of cow meat,” she said. The unnamed herder, from Jada LGA in Adamawa State, managed to escape with the rest of his herd.
Prince Ahmed Aliyu, Secretary of the Cattle Dealers Association in the state, identified the slain cow as belonging to Alhaji Siddiki Makaka, also from Jada LGA.
John added that the recovered meat has been handed over to the owner while investigations continue to apprehend the culprits.
“The Command is committed to safeguarding lives and property and urges members of the public with useful information to assist the police,” the statement concluded.
