Seven Killed as Bandits Ambush Katsina Community, Clash with Watch Corps
KATSINA — Armed bandits on Friday night killed at least seven people in Magajin Wando village, Katsina State, during a deadly raid that later escalated into a fierce gun battle with members of the Community Watch Corps (CWC).
The attack, which occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight, was initially repelled by the volunteer security group, forcing the assailants to retreat. But as CWC members escorted injured victims to a hospital, they were ambushed by the same gunmen.
According to the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, a firefight ensued during the ambush. The bandits riddled the CWC vehicle with bullets before setting it ablaze. Corps members, however, managed to escape.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the ambush was a revenge strike after several of the attackers were killed during the CWC’s initial counteroffensive.
Commending the CWC for its “bravery and sacrifice,” the state government said their intervention prevented “a far more devastating outcome.” It assured residents of continued collaboration with security agencies to track down and dismantle the criminal networks behind the violence.
