The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has applauded the Federal Government’s suspension of the four per cent Free on Board (FOB) import levy, describing it as a timely intervention that will protect the aviation industry from collapse.
In a joint statement signed by AON President, Dr. Abdulmunaf Sarina, and Vice President, Allen Onyema, the group said the levy, if implemented, would have escalated operating costs for domestic carriers and further weakened an already struggling industry.
According to AON, the suspension will help ease inflationary pressures, safeguard jobs, and keep Nigeria competitive in the global business environment.
“This suspension is a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, protecting critical sectors of the economy, and promoting sustainable growth,” the statement read. “Had the levy taken effect, airlines would have faced higher costs, worsening the economic challenges confronting the sector.”
The operators also commended the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for what they described as “listening leadership” in promptly responding to stakeholder concerns.
The statement noted: “Mr. Edun’s decision reflects patriotism, diligence, and fairness to all sectors of the economy. This bold step will safeguard the aviation sector, protect jobs, and reduce inflationary pressures.”
AON reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the government in strengthening the aviation industry and contributing to President Tinubu’s vision for national development.
The levy, first announced in April 2025 by Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi, was suspended on Monday, September 15, 2025, through a directive issued by Edun to the Customs Service.
