Killing of Ebonyi Monarch Barbaric, Unacceptable — Gov. Nwifuru
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has condemned the killing of a traditional ruler in the state, describing the act as tragic and barbaric.
The monarch, Josephat Ikegwu of Ishinkwo community in Onicha Local Government Area, was reportedly murdered in circumstances that have sparked outrage across the state.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, the governor said the killing represents a direct attack on the peace, unity, and collective conscience of Ebonyi.
“It is with a heart weighed down by grief and deep anguish that I condemn the gruesome and senseless murder of His Royal Highness,” the statement read, noting that the act also undermines the sanctity of the traditional institution.
The governor directed the state’s joint security architecture to immediately investigate the incident and uncover the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s death.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the people of Ishinkwo community, and residents of Onicha Local Government Area, assuring them that the government would not tolerate such acts of violence.
Nwifuru stated that security agencies have been fully mobilised to track down those responsible, vowing that perpetrators would be apprehended and brought to justice without exception.
He stressed that no individual or group, regardless of status or connections, would be spared if found culpable, reiterating that the protection of human life remains paramount under his administration.
The governor further reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening peace, security, and social order, noting that sustainable development cannot be achieved without a stable environment.
He called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and security agencies to work collectively to preserve peace and prevent further breakdown of law and order across the state.
