Anioma State: Okowa Disagrees with Nwoko, Insists Delta North Wants South-South Alignment

By Lawal Ibrahim ASABA — Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has taken a swipe at Senator Ned Nwoko over differing positions on the proposed Anioma State, accusing him of misleading the people of Delta North.

Speaking during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Oshimili South Local Government Area on Tuesday, Okowa said the people of Delta North are united in their desire for an Anioma State within the South-South geopolitical zone, contrary to suggestions that it should align with the South-East.

He also alleged that Nwoko’s position could undermine the status of Asaba as the state capital.

“There have been misconceptions and misrepresentations about the Anioma State project,” Okowa said.

“I do not believe any Anioma indigene is opposed to its creation.

However, what the people want is a state made up of the nine local government areas within the South-South, with Asaba as its capital.

”In remarks seen as directed at Nwoko, Okowa criticised attempts to alter the existing structure, describing such moves as ill-informed and against the collective interest of the people.

“Asaba has grown significantly and remains the recognised headquarters. No one can wish that away,” he added.

Okowa further faulted what he described as a unilateral approach to the state creation campaign, stressing the need for broader consultations and inclusive representation.

According to him, the process of creating a new state requires widespread consensus and must reflect the will of the people, not individual ambitions.

“When pursuing a cause like this, you must engage the people and understand their position.

It cannot be a one-man agenda,” he said.

The former governor also questioned the timing of renewed agitation for state creation, noting that the legislative process may not favour such moves at the moment.

He, however, reaffirmed support for the creation of Anioma State, emphasising that it must come through a collective and well-coordinated effort involving stakeholders and the current administration.
