The actor was said to have passed away in a hospital in Lagos after quietly managing the illness away from the public eye.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday, May 12, in an emotional post shared by Nigerian talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji, who described the news as devastating and urged prayers for the Ekubo family.
“Breaking News: Popular Nigeria Actor ‘ALEX EKUBO’ is Dead!!!!!!” Olatunji wrote on Facebook, followed by another post expressing condolences to the family.
Although details surrounding the specific type of cancer have not been disclosed, reports suggest the actor had been receiving treatment privately in recent months.
Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, the actor attended Federal Government College, Daura, and later studied Law at the University of Calabar.
He began his acting career in the mid-2000s, appearing in minor roles before rising to prominence in the early 2010s through films such as Ladies Men and Weekend Getaway.
Ekubo became widely known for his performances in romantic comedies and drama films, establishing himself as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable and commercially successful actors.
Over the years, he earned several accolades, including recognition at the Screen Nation Awards and appearances in major productions such as Tinsel and AY’s Crib. He also gained international attention after featuring in Yemi Alade’s hit music video Johnny.
In 2020, he was named among the United Nations’ Most Influential People of African Descent under 40, in recognition of his contributions to entertainment and social development.
The actor was previously engaged to American model Fancy Acholonu in 2021, though the engagement was later called off.
In recent months, Ekubo had largely stayed out of the public spotlight, a development now believed by associates to have been linked to his health challenges.
Fans, colleagues, and industry stakeholders have taken to social media to mourn his reported passing, with many expressing shock that he had kept his condition private.
Family members are expected to announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
