The African Democratic Congress has called for an independent investigation into allegations that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress diverted more than N800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee allocations to support the 2027 re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ADC described the allegations as disturbing and demanded full disclosure of any accounts or structures allegedly used for the reported deductions.
The statement, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the claims have heightened concerns over the use of public funds under the current administration.
According to the opposition party, if the allegations are true, they would amount to a major abuse of public trust and diversion of resources meant for development and citizens’ welfare.
The ADC argued that state governments have received increased allocations in recent years following the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, yet Nigerians continue to face rising hardship, inflation and insecurity.
“Under this APC government, states are receiving more money than at any other period in Nigeria’s history, yet Nigerians are poorer, hungrier and more desperate than ever before,” the statement said.
The party lamented that despite increased revenues, many sectors including healthcare, education, infrastructure and security remain underfunded.
It alleged that the reported diversion of FAAC allocations for political activities reflected a growing focus on 2027 elections rather than governance.
According to the ADC, Federation Account allocations are intended for salaries, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and social welfare, not for financing political campaigns.
The party further stated that the allegations raise serious concerns about accountability in APC-controlled states, especially amid worsening economic conditions.
“The same government asking citizens to endure sacrifice is allegedly supervising one of the largest political funding operations in Nigeria’s democratic history,” the statement added.
The ADC said Nigerians deserve transparency on whether public funds belonging to states and local governments were channelled into partisan political activities.
It warned that if proven, the alleged diversion could rank among the biggest political funding scandals in the country’s democratic history.
The party also accused the ruling APC of prioritising political survival over the welfare of citizens struggling with economic hardship.
