Lekki Cult Clash: Police Arrest 23 Suspects, Recover Weapons
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 23 suspects following a violent clash between rival cult groups in Lekki, which claimed three lives on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, while confirming the incidence explained that the clash broke out at a security duty post on an uninhabited plot along Wole Olateju Street.
According to him, Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, immediately launched a discreet investigation into the killings and personally led joint police teams to restore calm in the area.
“Extensive raids were conducted on criminal hideouts and blackspots across Lekki, resulting in the arrest of 23 suspects linked to the clash,” Hundeyin stated.
He disclosed that the operation, carried out by the newly established Anti-Cultism Team and tactical units under Elemoro Area Command, also led to the recovery of dangerous weapons and other items.
Recovered exhibits include an AK-47 rifle with a loaded magazine containing 14 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, a military camouflage cap, two cutlasses, wraps of Indian hemp, three hemp crushers, and a charm.
“These exhibits form part of the ongoing investigation and will serve as evidence against the suspects,” Hundeyin noted.
To prevent further violence, the command has introduced fresh security measures in Lekki and its environs. These include the redeployment of Divisional Police Officers for faster response to distress calls, as well as the deployment of the specialized Eko Strike Force to intensify patrols and clamp down on criminal activities.
Hundeyin assured residents that normalcy has returned to the area. “The security situation in the Lekki-Ajah axis is stable. Crime in Lekki is not alarming, and we urge residents to go about their lawful activities without fear,” he said.
He further emphasized that all suspects found culpable in the killings or arrested with weapons would be prosecuted, while urging residents to support security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements through the police emergency hotlines
