TUC Demands 50% Tax Cut Amid Fuel Crisis, Urges FG to Act on Economic Emergency

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called for a 50 percent tax reduction for workers and manufacturing companies to cushion the impact of the ongoing global fuel crisis.

The demand was part of resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, said the crisis, linked to global tensions, has worsened economic hardship for Nigerians.

“Despite Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing nation… crises often exacerbate hardship,” the communiqué stated.

The union urged the Federal Government to treat the situation as both a foreign policy and economic emergency.
“Government must take urgent steps to protect Nigerians and ensure that additional crude oil revenue is transparently deployed,” it said.
TUC also called for strategic interventions, including subsidising crude for local refineries.

“This can lower the cost of refined products without reverting to the discredited subsidy regime,” it added.
The union further condemned rising electricity tariffs without improved service.

“Nigerians must not be forced to pay for inefficiency,” the communiqué stressed.
It warned that failure to address workers’ concerns could trigger further action.
