ADC Crisis: Security Beefed Up at INEC Over Planned Protests

Security was heightened on Thursday around the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Maitama, Abuja, following threats of protests linked to the ongoing crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).A joint team of personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the State Security Service (SSS) cordoned off the area to prevent possible clashes between rival groups.Access to the commission’s premises on Zambezi Crescent was restricted, while security operatives closely monitored movements amid rising tensions fueled by social media mobilisation under the hashtag #OccupyINEC.Earlier in the day, a group of youths under the aegis of the Concerned Nigeria Youth Forum staged a solidarity march in support of INEC’s decision to delist Senator David Mark and former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, from its portal of political party leaders. The protesters, carrying banners with inscriptions such as “For a Credible Process in the Best Interest of Nigeria,” marched through parts of Maitama, chanting slogans and urging the commission to uphold electoral integrity.Their procession, which began in the early hours, encountered a heavy security presence, with police officers intercepting them near the INEC headquarters, leading to a brief but non-violent standoff. Security personnel also worked to control traffic and prevent the group from accessing the main gate.A spokesperson for the forum said the protest was aimed at countering what he described as “undue attacks” on INEC and to reinforce the need for credible electoral processes.“We are here to remind the commission that national interest must come first. Nigerian youths are watching and expect transparency and neutrality,” he said.Meanwhile, another group, the National Opposition Movement, has notified the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of its plan to hold a separate protest in Abuja on April 2, 2026.In a letter signed by its leader, Kasimu Maigari, the group requested traffic control and escort services, describing the protest as a lawful civic engagement.According to the notice, the procession will commence from Transcorp Hilton Junction in Maitama, pass through Shehu Shagari Way, and terminate at the Supreme Court complex in the Three Arms Zone. The development has further heightened security concerns, with authorities taking proactive steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the nation’s capital.
