PDP Caucus to Tinubu: Nigerians deserve Better, stop holding Osun LG funds
By Gift ChapiOdekina, Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the House of Representatives has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of worsening the plight of Nigerians, insisting that the federal government must “do better” in governance, security, and respect for the rule of law.
The Caucus, which met in Abuja, said its emergency session aligned with decisions of the party’s leadership in Zamfara State. Addressing journalists, the Leader of the Caucus, Hon. Fred Agbedi, declared that Nigerians were suffering under Tinubu’s watch.
“Not only killings, there’s a lot of hardship in this country and Nigerians are groaning in their pains daily. People are committing suicide because the government is not paying attention to them. Nigerians have come to know that PDP is the only party that can bring succour to them,” Agbedi said.
He condemned President Tinubu for withholding local government funds belonging to Osun State, describing the action as “anti-democratic.”
“We are surprised that a supposedly democratic person, the president of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who himself encountered a similar situation, is holding the local government funds and local government administration of Osun State to ransom. This is anti-democratic… we urge Mr. President to put a stop to this illegality,” Agbedi declared.
The lawmakers further accused the APC-led government of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives, citing widespread insecurity across states. “Massive killings are going on across the country… a government that cannot protect its people is not a government that is fit to continue in office,” the Caucus maintained.
Drawing a comparison with former President Goodluck Jonathan, Agbedi criticized Tinubu for being absent from the country while Nigerians faced crises.
“We can imagine a situation where Nigerians are killed and Mr. President is far away in Brazil and other countries. We remember that when the Chibok incident happened, President Goodluck Jonathan was out of the country and immediately it happened, he cut off his trip and returned to Nigeria,” he said.
On internal party matters, the Caucus congratulated Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun on his confirmation as substantive National Chairman of the PDP, praising the process as a demonstration of due process. “We are proud of what the National Executive Committee did yesterday… it has again proved that PDP is the only party to be relied on by Nigeria,” Agbedi added.
The lawmakers also demanded payment of debts owed to indigenous contractors, alleging that the government prioritizes foreign firms while Nigerian businesses suffer. They vowed to keep the APC administration in check.
“As a caucus, we will continue to ensure that we put this government on its toes… we will bring to attention all the illegalities that are perpetrated by this government and make sure Nigerians are better for it,” the PDP legislators pledged.
