Aviation Fuel Crisis: Regulator Sets New Jet-A1 Price Band, Proposes Credit Facility for Airlines

By Tunde Adebayo

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has introduced a new pricing framework for aviation fuel as part of measures to address rising costs in the sector.

The regulator recommended that Jet-A1 should sell between ₦1,760 and ₦1,988 per litre, with slightly higher rates of ₦1,809 to ₦2,037 applicable in Lagos and Abuja.

According to a statement issued after a technical committee meeting, the pricing structure reflects prevailing global market conditions.

“Following the engagements and current market fundamentals, we believe the indicative end-user price should range between ₦1,760 and ₦1,988 per litre,” the agency stated.

The authority attributed price volatility to global geopolitical tensions, noting that purchases outside the specified pricing window may be higher.

In addition to pricing adjustments, the NMDPRA proposed structural reforms, including direct sales from marketers to airlines and a 30-day credit window.
“Marketers should consider a 30-day credit window for airlines to pay up for supplies made,” the statement added.

The agency also called for improved coordination among industry stakeholders to stabilise the market and resolve outstanding debts.
