ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, following a Supreme Court judgment affirming the party’s leadership.
The party said the ruling, which upheld Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, raises serious concerns about INEC’s earlier decision to withdraw recognition from its leadership.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, who spoke on behalf of the party’s leadership, described the verdict as a decisive affirmation of the party’s legitimacy and structure.
“We congratulate all our members and leaders across the country on today’s Supreme Court ruling which affirmed the leadership of our party,” he said.
He added that the judgment had put to rest what he termed “contrived disputes and manufactured uncertainties,” while reinforcing the supremacy of the rule of law in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The party also commended the Supreme Court panel for what it described as a unanimous decision that strengthened confidence in the judiciary.
However, Abdullahi stressed that the ruling does not mark the end of the struggle, alleging that events leading to the dispute revealed attempts to undermine opposition parties.
“We will not be intimidated, distracted, or silenced. We remain committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative focused on tackling insecurity, reducing the cost of living, and creating jobs,” he said.
He urged party members and stakeholders to remain vigilant, noting that democracy requires sustained participation beyond courtroom victories.
“In light of this ruling, the ADC reiterates its position that the INEC Chairman must resign.
The circumstances surrounding this matter point to either a grave error of judgment or deliberate bad faith. In either case, the integrity of the office has been called into question,” he stated.
The party further called on INEC to immediately restore recognition of the Mark-led leadership across its official platforms.
It reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic principles and advancing the interests of Nigerians.
