NSITF to Lead NBA Session on Strengthening Legal Protection for Workers

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund will lead a special session at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, focusing on strengthening legal protections for workers and Nigeria’s social security framework.

The conference is scheduled to hold from August 21 to 28.
NSITF Managing Director/Chief Executive, Oluwaseun Faleye, will lead the session, which is themed, “Expanding the Legal Frontiers of Workplace Protection and Social Security Beyond Limits in Nigeria.”
The session builds on last year’s focus on raising awareness of the Employees’ Compensation Act 2010.

This year’s programme is expected to focus on implementation, employer compliance and strategies for extending workplace protection to workers across different sectors and income levels.

Faleye is expected to discuss the Fund’s efforts to expand coverage and strengthen collaboration with the judiciary and the NBA in enforcing the Employees’ Compensation Act.
The session will also examine the legal implications of payroll under-declaration and the need for greater transparency in employer obligations.

The Employees’ Compensation Act, administered by NSITF through the Employees’ Compensation Scheme, provides compensation, medical care and rehabilitation for workers who suffer workplace injuries, occupational diseases or death in the course of employment.
Despite the provisions of the law, the Fund has identified inadequate awareness, limited understanding of rights and obligations and enforcement gaps as continuing challenges.
It has also identified the under-declaration or exclusion of workers from employer payrolls as a major obstacle to accessing compensation benefits.
NSITF said lawyers have an important role to play in enforcing statutory obligations and protecting workers’ rights.
“Legal practitioners play a crucial role as stakeholders in promoting statutory obligations, advocating for employees, and supporting enforcement of the Act,” the Fund said.
The NBA Annual General Conference is expected to attract thousands of lawyers, judges and policymakers for discussions on law, governance, social justice and other national issues.
