The Plateau State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over renewed attacks in Mangu Local Government Area, saying more than 26 people were killed and 38 houses destroyed.
The attacks reportedly occurred in Bin-Per community in Bwai District and Jwak and Murish communities in Mangu Halle District between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The member representing Mangu South Constituency, Dr Matthew Sylvester Kwarpo, raised the issue under a Matter of Urgent Public Importance during plenary.
Kwarpo said 25 people were killed in Bin-Per, while another person was killed during attacks on Jwak and Murish communities.
He said several others sustained injuries.
“In a tragic turn of events, Bin-Per Community in Bwai District, as well as Jwak and Murish Communities in Mangu Halle District, all in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, were attacked by heavily armed individuals in the late hours of Monday,” he said.
According to the lawmaker, the attacks also resulted in the burning of 38 houses, destruction of farmlands, stored grains and other valuables.
He warned that the destruction of farms and food supplies could worsen hardship and threaten food security, particularly because many residents depend on agriculture.
Kwarpo called for urgent humanitarian intervention for affected families, many of whom had lost homes, food supplies and means of livelihood.
He urged the House to convene a stakeholders’ meeting to address the security situation and its implications for Mangu.
The lawmaker also called on security agencies to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance and the rapid deployment of personnel to vulnerable communities.
He stressed the need to address underlying grievances contributing to recurring violence and encouraged dialogue among stakeholders.
Kwarpo appealed to the Plateau State Government, the State Emergency Management Agency and other humanitarian organisations to provide relief materials, food, shelter and medical assistance.
The Assembly said security agencies must move beyond reacting to attacks after they occur and adopt preventive measures to protect vulnerable communities.
It also called for stronger collaboration among government, security agencies, traditional leaders and community stakeholders to restore lasting peace in Mangu.
