The Labour Party (LP) has successfully concluded its nationwide congresses, paving the way for its national convention scheduled to hold on April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State.
Interim National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, disclosed this in a statement shared via her X handle on Saturday.
The congresses, which began with ward-level elections, culminated in the emergence of leaders at state levels across the country.
Usman commended party members for their conduct throughout the exercise.
“As our party wraps up its congresses today, from ward to state levels, I extend warm congratulations to all elected leaders.
“I also commend members nationwide for their commitment to peaceful and rancour-free exercises. With congresses concluded, attention shifts to Umuahia for our convention.
“I urge party members and stakeholders to maintain unity, discipline, and teamwork as we gather on April 28,” she said.
She encouraged stakeholders to sustain the spirit of cooperation demonstrated during the congresses as the party prepares to elect new national leaders.
The party has been grappling with leadership disputes since the 2023 general elections, leading to the dissolution of the Abure-led National Working Committee and the establishment of a 29-member caretaker committee headed by Usman.
The crisis triggered legal battles, culminating in a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025, which declared that former National Chairman Julius Abure’s tenure had expired before the convention he conducted in March 2024.
Subsequently, a Federal High Court upheld the Usman-led leadership, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise it.
Despite the ruling, Abure has vowed to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court.
