LAGOS — A fatal road crash on Tuesday claimed the life of a female passenger after two Toyota Sienna buses collided head-on along the Third Mainland Bridge.
The accident occurred at the Ilaje axis inward Iyana Oworo and involved vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the crash to reckless driving and excessive speeding.
LASTMA spokesperson, Taofeek Adebayo, said a woman died on the spot, while her 30-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle, survived the impact.
“The severity of the impact underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving behaviours, particularly excessive speeding,” he said.
Adebayo disclosed that one of the drivers fled the scene immediately after the collision, while the second driver was apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
“However, the second driver was promptly apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police to facilitate thorough investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law,” he stated.
He added that LASTMA operatives on patrol quickly moved to control traffic and prevent further disruption on the busy bridge.
“Safety cones were strategically deployed to cordon off the accident scene and ensure the protection of other road users,” he said, noting that officers from the Oworonsoki Police Division also responded to document the incident and commence statutory procedures.
According to him, the remains of the deceased have been evacuated, while emergency responders maintained a presence to manage traffic flow and prevent secondary crashes.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s warning against dangerous driving, especially speeding on major highways.
“Motorists must eschew reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding, which remains a predominant cause of fatal road accidents,” he said.
The crash has renewed concerns over road safety compliance on high-speed corridors in Lagos, particularly the Third Mainland Bridge, one of the city’s busiest transport routes.
