The Plateau State Executive Council has approved the procurement and installation of 4,029 solar-powered streetlight units and 199 Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV, cameras across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis to strengthen security and public safety.
The council also approved the establishment of a Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to coordinate interventions for vulnerable residents and people affected by humanitarian emergencies.
The decisions were reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, who disclosed the decisions, said the 199 CCTV cameras would be procured and installed in two phases.
The council also approved the maintenance of existing streetlights across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.
Ramnap said the measures were aimed at improving surveillance and strengthening public safety.
On the new ministry, she said it would provide an institutional framework for coordinating humanitarian assistance, social protection and poverty-reduction programmes.
The ministry will incorporate the activities of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and the Trauma Centre.
According to her, the arrangement would improve coordination between the state and Federal Government on humanitarian interventions.
The council also approved the renovation of the administrative buildings of the Jos Main Market and Satellite Market to improve their functionality and management.
