The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media claiming it called on Muslims to pray for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, the council described the reports as fabricated and originating from anonymous, unofficial social media platforms aimed at dragging the organisation into partisan political controversy.
The council stressed that it never issued any directive or statement urging Muslims to embark on prayers for the removal of the INEC chairman, nor did it threaten the conduct of elections.
“The council categorically dissociates itself from these claims in their entirety.
These reports are false and clearly intended to create unnecessary tension and confusion,” the statement said.It urged the public, particularly the Muslim Ummah and the media, to disregard the claims and rely solely on verified communications from its official channels.
Despite debunking the reports, the council reaffirmed its earlier stance on the conduct of the INEC chairman, maintaining that he should either resign or be removed from office.
According to the SCSN, its position is not influenced by political or sectarian interests but is based on concerns over actions it believes fall short of the neutrality, integrity and patriotism expected of such a sensitive national office.
“In any rational and just society, such expressed beliefs and sentiments are fundamentally inconsistent with the principles guiding the office,” the council stated.
The organisation further emphasised its commitment to justice, equity and peaceful coexistence, insisting it would not allow itself to be used for political manipulation.
It also reiterated its dedication to promoting a peaceful society where citizens can freely practise their religion without fear, while maintaining a clear distance from partisan politics.
