Trump Deploys Federal Resources to Memphis in Push to Combat Violent Crime
President Donald J. Trump has announced the deployment of federal resources to Memphis, a move aimed at tackling the city’s long-standing struggle with violent crime. The initiative, framed as a federal-state partnership, drew widespread reaction from residents, business owners, and lawmakers who see it as a turning point in efforts to restore safety.
For many locals, the action feels long overdue.
“This is an opportunity for us and for our city. I hope we make the most of it,” said an East Memphis business owner.
“You don’t really know how bad it is in Memphis unless you’ve lived here for decades. This has been needing to be done for a long time,” added a longtime resident.
A woman who recently lost her son to gun violence remarked: “If the National Guard is going to be a buffer between them and the police to help minimize crime, then that’s a great thing.”
Restaurant owners, many of whom have faced daily challenges from crime, also voiced support.
“I have armed security seven days a week. Without a doubt, this will help,” said one restaurateur. Another offered free meals to federal personnel, saying: “We’ve had to close earlier and earlier because there’s no traffic on the streets. I’m very concerned about crime, like everybody else.”
Some residents framed the move as overdue federal recognition.
“President Trump is finally saying, ‘Yes, Memphis matters. We are going to make Memphis safe again’ — because our local leaders have failed to do so,” one resident commented.
Officials Welcome Federal Involvement
Elected leaders at both the state and federal level expressed gratitude for the move.
- Governor Bill Lee thanked the Trump administration, saying Tennessee had worked for months on a strategy for Memphis: “We now will have resources to finally address an issue that has really dragged on for way too long.”
- Sen. Marsha Blackburn praised the initiative as part of a long-term plan to “Make Memphis Safe Again.”
- Sen. Bill Hagerty called it “an extraordinary display of federal, state, and local governments coming together and setting partisan politics aside to keep communities safe.”
- Rep. David Kustoff backed the deployment of the National Guard and stressed the importance of permanent federal law enforcement support.
- State Sen. Brent Taylor criticized Democrats for opposing the measure but expressed optimism: “Safe and clean streets are in our future.”
- State Rep. John Gillespie added that the move would bolster local law enforcement: “I’m encouraged about the National Guard deployment to Memphis.”
