Easter: Abbas, Kalu urge Nigerians to embrace unity, pray for nation

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, have called on Nigerians to embrace unity, hope, and compassion while offering prayers for the nation as Christians celebrate Easter.Speaking in his Easter message, Abbas urged Christians to emulate the teachings of Jesus Christ, whom he described as a perfect role model, stressing the need for continued prayers for Nigeria and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Speaker noted that such prayers have the power to attract divine intervention in addressing socio-economic, political, and religious challenges facing the country. He highlighted that Easter represents sacrifice, selflessness, obedience, and love—virtues he said Nigerians must imbibe to ensure peace and stability.Abbas also called for mutual respect among people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds, describing the coincidence of the 2026 Ramadan and Lent seasons as a divine opportunity to strengthen unity between Muslims and Christians.Similarly, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu urged Nigerians to embrace hope, unity, and a shared sense of humanity, describing Easter as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, renewal, and the triumph of hope over despair.Kalu called on citizens to reflect on the values symbolized by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, while encouraging continued prayers for the nation and its leadership. He stressed the need for Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divides in pursuit of peace, unity, and sustainable national development.“Easter speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless power of hope. It calls on us to love one another, to stand united, and to uphold our shared humanity, especially in difficult times,” Kalu said. The Deputy Speaker also urged leaders at all levels to prioritise inclusiveness, fairness, and the welfare of citizens, noting that true leadership must be rooted in compassion and service. He further encouraged Nigerians to extend kindness to the less privileged, emphasizing that collective acts of compassion can help build a more caring and cohesive society. Both leaders reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to legislative efforts aimed at strengthening national unity, fostering economic growth, and improving the well-being of Nigerians, while wishing Christians a peaceful and fulfilling Easter celebration.
