Five people have died while 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapses in Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
The incidents occurred on Saturday in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area, and Kurna, Fagge Local Government Area.
According to the Fire Service, distress calls were received at about 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., prompting immediate deployment of rescue personnel.
The first incident occurred at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, where an unfinished building measuring about 50 by 50 feet collapsed while six workers were reportedly on the site.
Two workers, identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar, were rescued alive.
Four others were pulled out unconscious but were later confirmed dead. They were identified as 18-year-old Sunusi Surajo, 20-year-old Bashir Ibrahim, 25-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and 30-year-old Abubakar.
All six workers were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for medical attention before being handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.
The second incident occurred at Kurna, behind the Primary School in Fagge Local Government Area, where an Islamiyya school, identified as Khadija Idris Bala, collapsed with nine students trapped inside.
Eight students were rescued alive. They were identified as 13-year-old Hassana Isah, 13-year-old Usaina Isah, 13-year-old Zulaihat M. Gambo, 12-year-old Nawara Yahaya, 12-year-old Nusaiba Isah, 12-year-old Hasiya Munir, 15-year-old Khadija Isah and 12-year-old Hadiza Haruna.
The ninth victim, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead.
The surviving students were subsequently handed over to the school headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.
The Fire Service said investigations were ongoing to determine the causes of the two collapses.
It urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to adhere strictly to approved building standards and safety regulations.
The agency also warned that additional precautions should be taken during the rainy season to minimise the risk of building collapses.

The National Rescue Movement (NRM) has said Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship election demonstrates that voters can prioritise a candidate’s credibility, competence and relationship with the electorate over party affiliation.
The National Chairman of the movement, Mr Chinedu Obi, stated this while congratulating Adeleke on his victory.
Obi said the election had reaffirmed the principle that political power ultimately belongs to the people and that voters must be allowed to freely choose their leaders.
“The result is also a powerful testimony to the enduring principle that, in a democracy, the people are sovereign and their will must ultimately prevail. The electorate of Osun State have exercised their constitutional right to choose their leader, despite all odds,” he said.
The NRM urged Adeleke to regard his re-election as a renewed mandate to improve infrastructure, employment, education, healthcare, security and economic opportunities across the state.
According to the movement, while political parties provide the platform for candidates, the personal record and character of a candidate remain critical factors in determining electoral success.
“A political party provides the vehicle, but it is the candidate’s record, character, competence, connection with the people and ability to inspire confidence that can determine electoral success in a genuinely competitive and credible election,” the NRM said.
The movement also called on Adeleke to extend his administration to all residents of the state, including those who voted against him.
It urged political parties and their supporters to accept the outcome of the election and strengthen democratic institutions through peaceful engagement, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
“The people have spoken. Democracy has prevailed. The mandate must now be translated into greater service, greater development and greater prosperity for the people of Osun State,” Obi said.
