The Kaduna State Government has approved N300 million as a one-off payment of Earned Academic Allowance to academic staff of Kaduna State University (KASU).
The government also constituted a nine-member committee to engage the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU chapter, and other staff unions over their outstanding demands.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, said the measures were designed to improve staff welfare and promote industrial harmony at the university.
He said the N300 million payment was part of efforts to address more than N800 million in accumulated entitlements dating back to 2016.
According to him, the administration of Governor Uba Sani had also paid outstanding withheld salaries and released more than N300 million for accreditation of academic programmes and postgraduate resource verification.
Funds had also been released to settle outstanding SIWES supervision allowances.
The government further established a N50 million monthly standing order for the systematic settlement of arrears.
The committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo, has four weeks to complete its assignment.
Its membership includes the Commissioners for Business, Innovation and Technology and Youth, representatives of the Local Government Service Board, Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, KASU management and relevant permanent secretaries.
The committee will review demands by ASUU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
It will also examine the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and compare KASU’s conditions with those of other state-owned universities.
The government urged the unions to embrace dialogue and collective bargaining rather than industrial action that could disrupt the academic calendar.
