Mokwa in Niger State has been hit by another devastating rainstorm, less than a year after severe flooding displaced residents and destroyed property in the community.
The latest disaster, which occurred on Monday, left at least two people dead, including a three-year-old girl, while about 50 residents were displaced after no fewer than 100 houses were destroyed. Several vehicles were also damaged in the storm.

Local sources also reported that a woman and her five children sustained injuries during the incident and are currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The town, which serves as the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area, is still recovering from last year’s flood disaster that reportedly claimed over 300 lives and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Information and Linkages, Dr. Abdullahi Hussaini, said efforts were underway to compile a comprehensive assessment report in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, the Nigerian Red Cross and other emergency response organisations for submission to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He confirmed that one child had died and noted that about 10 injured persons had been treated and discharged, with the local government chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Jibrin Muregi, covering medical expenses.

According to him, the displaced residents are currently being sheltered by relatives and friends, as no formal internally displaced persons (IDP) camp has been set up yet.

The Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, Alhaji Abdullahi Jibrin Muregi, described the damage as “colossal” and appealed to the Niger State Government and relevant agencies to urgently intervene and support affected families.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Arah, has led a response team to Mokwa alongside other emergency officials to assess the level of destruction and coordinate relief efforts.
