The Delta State Police Command has uncovered a disturbing case of human trafficking involving a 19-year-old girl from Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, who allegedly lost her womb after being trafficked to Ivory Coast for prostitution.
The victim, identified simply as Ejiro, was reportedly lured abroad with promises of a better job opportunity by a woman identified as Blessing, said to be a friend of her father and a mother of four.
According to the police, Blessing later handed the teenager over to another woman, Esther, who allegedly arranged her trip to Ivory Coast.
In a video released by the police command on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, described the incident as “one of the most pathetic cases,” condemning the alleged treatment of the victim as inhuman.
Police said Ejiro discovered upon arrival in Ivory Coast that she was expected to engage in prostitution. After refusing and pleading to return to Nigeria, she was allegedly forced to drink an unknown substance.
The teenager reportedly became ill and was taken to a facility presented as a hospital, where she was allegedly injected until she lost consciousness before undergoing surgery.
According to the police, medical examinations later confirmed that her womb had been removed.
Edafe alleged that the traffickers wanted the victim to continue in prostitution “without fear of pregnancy.”
Police further disclosed that after the surgical wound on her stomach failed to heal properly, the victim was abandoned in Lagos before eventually finding her way back to Delta State, where the matter was reported to authorities.
The police said investigations led to the arrest of Blessing and Esther.
During interrogation, Blessing allegedly confessed to receiving N400,000 in connection with the operation, while Esther reportedly admitted collecting N150,000.
“The painful part is that one of the women involved has an 18-year-old daughter. She could not use her own daughter, but collected money to destroy another person’s child,” Edafe said.
The police said investigations were ongoing to apprehend other persons connected to the trafficking network and the alleged illegal operation.
