The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that members of the flight crew of an Air Peace Boeing 737-524 tested positive for alcohol and cannabis following an incident in Port Harcourt.
The aircraft, with registration 5N-BQQ, was involved in the incident on July 13, 2025, at Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State.
According to NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, toxicological tests conducted on the crew confirmed traces of alcohol, while a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the psychoactive substance in cannabis.
She explained that the findings are being reviewed under the human performance and safety management aspects of the investigation.
“The flight, operating from Lagos to Port Harcourt with 103 persons on board, landed long on Runway 21 after an unstabilised final approach. It touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and came to a halt 209 metres into the clearway. Fortunately, all passengers and crew disembarked safely without injuries,” Oladeji said.
In response, the NSIB issued immediate safety recommendations to Air Peace, including strengthening crew resource management (CRM) training on handling unstabilised approaches, reinforcing go-around decisions, and tightening internal fitness-for-duty checks before dispatch.
Oladeji noted that a preliminary report detailing early findings has been published on the NSIB website, while the final report will provide comprehensive conclusions and additional safety recommendations to improve Nigeria’s aviation sector.
