SOKOTO — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, critical national assets and communities in Sokoto State, even as the state government intensifies its support for security agencies operating across the state.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Mr A.A. Ajayi, disclosed this on Tuesday when he received officials of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, led by its Chairman, Comrade Ankeli Emmanuel, who paid a courtesy visit to his office.
Ajayi commended the growing cooperation between the Corps, Sokoto State Government and the media in tackling the security challenges confronting the state.
He also praised the state government for its continued provision of material and logistical support to security agencies, saying the assistance had strengthened their operational capacity and enhanced the safety of personnel deployed to volatile areas.
According to him, the recent provision of four operational vehicles, including an armoured vehicle, by the state government had proved critical during security operations, particularly in areas vulnerable to attacks and ambushes.
Ajayi said the importance of the armoured vehicle became evident during a recent ambush in which NSCDC personnel came under attack.
He explained that one of the Corps’ vehicles was damaged during the attack, with its windscreen shattered, but the armoured vehicle provided the protection required for the officers to withstand the assault and escape from the danger zone.
He said, “The armoured vehicle provided the necessary protection that enabled the officers to withstand the attack and escape from the danger zone.”
Ajayi noted that without such operational support, the consequences of the ambush could have been more devastating.
He described the incident as a reflection of the risks routinely faced by security personnel operating in dangerous environments, stressing that NSCDC officers continue to put their lives on the line to protect communities and maintain peace.
The commandant said the state government’s support went beyond ordinary assistance, describing it as a strategic investment in the survival, mobility and operational effectiveness of security personnel confronting criminals and terrorists.
He further stressed the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, government institutions, the media and communities, noting that the fight against insecurity could not be won by any single organisation.
Ajayi commended journalists for reporting the activities and sacrifices of security personnel, saying responsible media coverage had helped bring the challenges and achievements of security agencies to public attention.
He assured journalists that the NSCDC command would remain open and accessible to the media, particularly those seeking information on security-related issues.
He said the Corps would continue working with the Sokoto State Government, sister security agencies and other stakeholders to tackle emerging threats and protect residents.
Ajayi added that recent developments had shown that security remained a collective responsibility, requiring sustained government investment, courageous security personnel, responsible journalism and community cooperation.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Ankeli Emmanuel, assured the NSCDC leadership of the continued support of journalists in professionally reporting the activities and achievements of the Corps.
Emmanuel commended NSCDC personnel for their commitment to protecting lives and property, particularly those risking their lives in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality.
He said the media would continue to serve as a bridge between security agencies and the public through accurate, balanced and responsible reporting.
He also called for sustained collaboration between journalists and security agencies, saying effective information sharing and responsible journalism were essential to building public confidence, countering misinformation and strengthening efforts to restore lasting peace in Sokoto State.
