A Spanish court has ruled that there is no criminal liability in connection with the car crash that killed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, in July 2025.
Jota, 28, was driving the vehicle with Silva, 25, as a passenger when the fatal accident occurred on July 3, 2025, in the province of Zamora in north-west Spain.
Investigators found that the Lamborghini they were travelling in suffered a high-speed tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle on the A-52 dual carriageway. The loss of control caused the car to crash into the central reservation before bursting into flames.
Following a review of evidence from the crash scene and expert reports from road traffic specialists, the High Court of Justice for the Castilla y León region concluded that no criminal proceedings would be pursued in relation to the deaths.
Officials from the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Castilla y León confirmed that a lower court in Puebla de Sanabria had previously dismissed the case after examining documentary evidence and findings from the Civil Guard’s traffic unit.
However, they noted that while criminal proceedings have been closed, the ruling does not prevent civil claims from being filed by affected parties.
Jota had been travelling back to England ahead of Liverpool’s pre-season preparations after being advised not to fly following a minor medical procedure. The Portugal international had recently completed a successful campaign, winning both the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal.
His brother, André Silva, was also a professional footballer, having played for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division at the time of his death.
The brothers were laid to rest on July 5 in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, in a funeral attended by family, friends, teammates, and football figures including Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and Portugal manager Roberto Martínez.
Their deaths prompted widespread tributes across the football world, with Liverpool opening both physical and online books of condolence at Anfield.
Jota had scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
