The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the death of 10 police officers during a gun battle with armed bandits in Makuku village, Zuru Emirate, along the Kebbi-Zamfara border.
The command also said more than 17 bandits were killed during the encounter, while several others sustained injuries.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said in a statement that the bandits had stormed the community with the intention of attacking residents and possibly abducting some of them.
According to him, the police mobile force responded swiftly after receiving credible intelligence about the planned attack and engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Usman said the confrontation resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with 10 police personnel losing their lives and others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
“Yes, there was gun fight between our men and bandits at Makuku village and tragically we lost ten officers while we killed over seventeen bandits,” he said.
The police spokesperson said the injured officers were receiving treatment at a health facility.
He described the deceased officers as personnel who died in active service, stressing that their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
Usman also assured that the injured personnel would receive the necessary medical attention.
