By Shola Bawa

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, has lauded Nigeria’s strides in maritime safety and security, pledging the UN body’s continued support to consolidate recent achievements, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.

Dominguez, who met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos on Friday, said Nigeria’s success in curbing piracy and strengthening safety standards had positioned the country as a model in regional maritime governance.

President Tinubu, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the sector, pointed to the newly adopted National Maritime Policy as a tool to modernize operations, drive economic growth, and reduce dependence on fossil energy.

He stressed that maritime development would be central to Nigeria’s long-term national strategy, urging stronger global partnerships to unlock the sector’s potential.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, facilitated the meeting, which also brought together leading players in the maritime industry for discussions on deepening collaboration.
