ABUJA — The Accord Party has called for the immediate prosecution of Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi over an alleged call for violence against its members and supporters in Ijeshaland, Osun State, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The party said the alleged comments, contained in a campaign video circulating on social media, had heightened concerns over the safety of voters and political supporters ahead of the poll.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Omorogbe, Accord alleged that Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, made the remarks while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a campaign in Ijeshaland.
The party urged security agencies to investigate the allegation and take immediate steps to prevent any possible escalation into violence.
“His outburst is outrageous and reprehensible, and has heightened the political tension in the state ahead of the governorship election,” Accord said.
It called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services to apprehend Fadahunsi and take measures to restrain his supporters and persons the party described as APC thugs.
Accord said the alleged comments were particularly disturbing because they were allegedly made by a serving senator only days before the election.
“For a sitting senator to condescend so low to publicly threaten the lives of fellow compatriots days to the gubernatorial poll in the state is unjust and unacceptable,” the party said.
The party also alleged that more than 60 of its members had been arrested and detained in Abuja and Nasarawa State in an attempt to prevent them from participating in Saturday’s election.
It further alleged that the Police were planning to arrest additional party leaders and members before the poll, describing the alleged actions as part of an attempt to weaken its participation and favour the APC.
“This theatre of the absurd and fear mongering must stop forthwith,” the party said.
Accord also alleged that its members and supporters across Osun had suffered political violence, intimidation, harassment and arrests by individuals it claimed were associated with the APC, alleging that some of the activities occurred in collaboration with security agencies.
The party demanded the release of those it described as unlawfully detained and called on authorities to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties and their supporters.
It also appealed to the international community, including the European Union, United States, United Kingdom, African Union and ECOWAS, to closely monitor developments in Osun.
“The people demand a free, fair, credible, inclusive and peaceful governorship election that meets international standards,” Accord said.
The party urged Osun residents to come out and vote without fear, insisting that the choice of governor must be determined by voters rather than intimidation or violence.
“Accord prepares for an election, not war. The political ambition of anybody is not worth the blood of fellow citizens,” it said.
The party further urged stakeholders to resist any attempt to manipulate the electoral process and allow voters to freely choose their governor.
“Let the Osun electorate freely choose their governor. Any attempt to undermine the electoral process in favour of a political party must be resisted by all stakeholders,” Accord said.
It also urged its supporters to vote for Governor Ademola Adeleke, whom it described as the leader it trusted to continue his work in the state.
Accord described Saturday’s election as a defining moment for Osun and urged voters to support the party, which it said was first on the ballot.
