Oyo Govt Proceeds with Ibadan Coronation Despite Absence of Three High Chiefs

The Oyo State Government on Friday proceeded with the coronation of selected high chiefs in Ibadan, despite the absence of three nominees who had earlier requested a postponement.
The affected chiefs—Sharafadeen Alli, Adebayo Akande and Lateef Oyelade—had formally notified authorities of their unavailability for the ceremony and sought a deferment.
The coronation, however, went ahead as scheduled at the historic Mapo Hall, attracting dignitaries, traditional leaders and government officials, in what appeared to be a firm stance by the state to maintain the timeline of the exercise.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Olubadan’s palace confirmed that the high chiefs had communicated their inability to attend, with the request transmitted to the state government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
Despite the development, the government insisted on proceeding with the event, underscoring its commitment to sustaining traditional administrative processes in Ibadanland.
Some members of the Olubadan-in-Council attended the ceremony, led by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, who represented the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. Their presence provided institutional backing, even as the absence of key figures drew attention.
Also notably absent was the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, further highlighting the high-profile no-shows at the event.
Observers said the turnout reflected a delicate balance between adherence to traditional authority and compliance with government directives in chieftaincy matters.
Meanwhile, the Olubadan’s palace had earlier dismissed speculation of any rift between the monarch and the state government, maintaining that Governor Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan enjoy cordial relations.
Security was heightened around Mapo Hall, while cultural displays and traditional rites were performed in line with Ibadan customs, adding colour and significance to the ceremony.
