Ndume Laments Killing of 6 Soldiers in Borno Attack, Urges FG to Better Equip Military

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South) has again raised concern over persistent attacks by Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents, following a fresh assault on Mussa community in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, where six soldiers were killed.

The lawmaker said the incident, which occurred around midday on Wednesday, involved an attempted infiltration of a military formation by the insurgents.

A woman was also reportedly killed in the crossfire during the encounter.Sources indicated that several of the attackers were neutralised as troops repelled the assault.

Reacting to the development, Ndume commiserated with the families of the victims and renewed his call on the Federal Government to adequately equip security agencies to effectively tackle insurgency.

“Our Armed Forces are doing their best, but they remain constrained by inadequate equipment,” he said, stressing the need for the government to prioritise the training, arming, equipping, and motivation of troops.

He advocated the provision of advanced military hardware, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, fighter jets, and drones to enhance operational effectiveness.

Ndume, however, praised the efforts of the military, police, Civilian Joint Task Force, and local vigilantes for their continued sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

He also extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, praying for the repose of their souls. In a related development, troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled another attack by suspected insurgents on Benisheikh in Borno State.

The incident, which occurred late on April 14, saw troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade engage the attackers and force them to retreat.Military sources said no fatalities were recorded among soldiers, although three personnel sustained injuries and were evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for treatment.

While the number of casualties on the side of the insurgents remains unclear, troops have commenced follow-up operations to track fleeing fighters.

The military noted that although the general security situation in the theatre remains relatively calm, it is still unpredictable.
